Installing Tight-Fitting Rear Wheels?

Any tips for installing rear wheels? My 1915 Overland has inner and outer brake shoes between which the drums must pass. Also, there is the axle key, the oil seal and the roller bearings. Plus, the wheels are heavy!

You could try getting the car high enough that you could put the tire and wheel on a floor jack. If you have a good one it seems like you could control it pretty well for elevation. If the jack is perpendicular to the car, when you get it lined up you could use the jack to advance it in while you fiddle with the various components to get it to fit. You could also pull off the service (outside) brakes as a last resort. Hopefully you have a good helper to run the jack once you get it set right. Good luck!

Thanks for the tips. I did finally get the wheels on. I just surmized that the key was lined up correctly and then turned the wheel while pushing. I think that allowed it to slip between the brake linings, etc.

Good for you Phil...perseverance is the name of the game when it comes to antique automobile. If one thing doesn't work, try another idea and then maybe another. I had the opposite issue when removing the rear wheels form an early American-LaFrance (with a similar set-up to your Overland). Sadly the Alf had set for many years stationary and if you guessed that the wheels were stuck, you were exactly right. I did battle with the brake drum/brake shoes for two days before I finally won the battle. Are you driving the Overland yet? What "Tip" do you have, now that you have the rear wheels on, for setting and adjusting both the emergence and running brakes?

I'm still restoring the Overland, and the engine is not yet installed. I have a litttle blog on the AACA Forum. I have more free time now, so more things are getting done, at least on the cars.
