1903 Columbus Electric and 1916 Baker Rauch Lang Electric

Postby Cargirl » Sat Mar 21, 2015 11:46 am

I wonder if someone might help me in finding identifying numbers on either of the cars listed above.

Are there records that I might be able to consult when I finally am able to identify the cars by chassis - body - engine number to confirm the cars production year?

I am only two hours away from Hershey and would be more than happy to visit the AACA library for research - if anyone has any suggestions of reading material that might help me understand these cars better.

Thanks,
Cargirl

You might try the Horseless Carriage Library. They have a lot of specs on early cars. You can submit a research request here
https://hcfi.org/ResearchRequest.php Or, call Mac Tuesday through Friday at (619) 464-0301

Good luck

I doubt you'll find factory serial number records on these cars, but I see three Columbus Electrics in the HCCA Roster. Those owners might be of assistance. The Standard Catalog of American Cars says "Although the [Baker, Rauch & Lang] designations were occasionally used in the trade press ... the cars to which they referred were more properly designated under their individual names."

I have a 1903 Columbus and serial number 3174. I am trying to sort it out. Runs well and seems to be in good condition. Here is our car at our home in Stone Mountain (suburb Atlanta) Georgia.

Phil, I am interested in finding more people with 1903 Columbus (or similar cars). How do I access the Roster? I am a recent member of the HCCA

Each member gets a copy of the Roster, the 2015/16 being the most recent. You can email one of the club officers to see if they have a copy for you. If you can't get a copy, I can send you information from it.

No online version, but perhaps some day. It would be more up-to-date, perhaps.
