Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Three, with some effort, and simple design, I can see why aluminum has been used for MANY years with our antique automobiles. This is my tip for the day, do not be afraid of aluminum.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here, I will post a few pictures of a nice race car seen at this years Bakersfield meet. This is off the subject of Locomobile reliability improvements but does share some good design qualities that can be used in our own builds for working with aluminum.
Enjoy....

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I was shared some "Advice" on a possible locations to research and see if a complete copy of the Locomobile Service handbook may be found, (same as my incomplete copy). I will share them here. One reference is the AACA library. They are currently checking to see what they have. The second reference ...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here is what gives the early Locomobile the ability to stop and start, (cone clutch). What are your thoughts, experience and advice, from the close-up picture of the clutch material? I am thinking that this clutch has many more miles. Of course I will need to degrease as the rear main has been leaki...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

My above comment is really directed to me. This year is the first time that I have had time to attend. I am recently retired so I do have a bit more control of my time. Next year I will take my brother to Bakersfield so he can partake of the cornucopia of Model T Ford parts available.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I made the round trip to Bakersfield, had a good time, pleasant weather and good friendly folks. My tip for the day, If you live near and have the old car bug, you miss out if you don't participate in Swap Meets like Bakersfield.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

You have a good eye! The "Tip" of the day, be careful when it comes to buying things on the internet. You may get a hidden surprise! (like I did). Does anyone here have a copy of the same Locomobile Instruction Book that I have? I would sure like to add the missing pages to my book, even copies! Al

Re: Source for "T" bolts needed

Hello Pete, Sadly, making these "T" bolts from scratch will probably be what I will be doing. I am OK with a welded joint the tween the "T" strap and the mounting stud or if I choose to use a threaded sleeve so no one will see the threads or nut, just the head of the retaining hardware. Like my Gran...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I am going to post a picture about buying antique automobile literature. I have purchased an original Locomobile Service and Operators Manual, with the assurance of it having no missing pages and everything tight together (as in no loose pages). I won't tell you what the problem is, but you take a l...

Re: 1910 Overland restoration

Hello Jack,
Nice to share a little bit of your success with us. I really liked the wheel start! :-) It sure sounds good, will your carb behave as you run up the RPM's? Did you have a puddle of gasoline after you shut it off?

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Now I will share the "Rest of the Story". Looking at the first of the three pictures, you will notice a longer shift slot. That is the slot that allows the operator to shift into reverse, (further forward than being engaged in 1rst gear for forward motion). Views 2 and 3 show the bottom and side vie...
