Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I have two different sets of jugs that need some care and attention. One has brass plugs and the second set has cast caps. I am more worried about that set that the brass ones. Thanks for your "advice"......

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Pete,
When you removed your valve caps, did you use heat, did you use simply easy torque or did you use a nudge from an impact gun to shake them loose?

Re: Model T headlight gasket installation

I am not familiar with the 1915 Ford Model T headlight design. I do, however, have a friend that is very familiar. I will check with him and see what he has to say about your headlight gasket information need.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Hello Pete, Thanks for your"Advice". If you look back on page 7, I posted pictures of the wrenches that I have had cut out on a CNC Plamsa Cutting table. I left a long arm so I could tap a bit if needed but also to devise a clamp using an old spark plug and a cross bar to hold the wrench firmly onto...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Pete, Do you use any type of gasket sealer with your solid gaskets when doing an install or do you put the gaskets in dry?

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Hello Pete and Phil, Thanks for your "Tips and Advice" regarding copper crush gaskets. Maybe I am being plenty fussy on this subject! But I do want to minimize the chance of mechanical failure any place I can. It is probably not a big deal as these old "T" head engines at most are low compression. A...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Hello Pete,
The measurements of the valve cap to jug copper o-ring is: ID 2-1/4" and OD 2-3/4". I prefer filled copper crush gaskets but would use a solid copper gasket if that is all I can come up with. I will next post a picture of the holes I need to seal.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Hello Pete, Does your stretch method distort the gasket much? That does sound like an option. My rebuilt Locomobile engine has McMaster Carr copper gaskets in it now and they are holding. I do not care for the fit and it bothers me to the point that I am going to do something different before I actu...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I will be looking for a bit of "Advice" soon after I get the valve caps off the jugs. What is the best source for procuring formed copper gaskets to fit between the jug and the cap? If no good source is available, who has been successful in cutting/building homemade copper gaskets? Please share your...

Re: Jones Speedometer

OOps.....
Brad, were you able to get the ring off the Speedo without damaging it? If you have been successful, how did you do it. Follow up pictures would be good.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here is the octagonal tool custom cut. The advice I would share is that some jobs (like this one) require some fore thought in order to stop or minimize damage as we go about the process of restoring our antique auto's.

Here is another later Locomobile jug with an octagonal valve cover cap. Same thinking as before on this one.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here is the custom built hexagonal tool. I will modify an old spark plug and weld in a stud to be used to fix the tool firmly to the cap and hold it in place while I gently massage off the cap with a bit of heat and love taps with a whammer.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here is my "TIP" of the day. I have messed around trying to come up with a very prudent and suitable tool for removing the Locomobile valve cover caps. I had a friend with a CNC controlled Plasma torch to cut out two tools, (both will need to be finish fit with a file for the best possible fit). One...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Back on the 1909 Locomobile reliability improvements. I am nearing the point of assembling the cone clutch and setting the tension spring for contact pressure between the flywheel face and the face of the clutch cone. I am curious as to how much tension should I put on the tension spring. I know tha...

Re: Jones Speedometer

Hello Jeff, I caught your intent and tried to follow your lead on the "pump pliers" thought for removing the speedo ring! When I was in my haste as a teenager and before I had a little age and wisdom. I would have been quick to give the pump pliers a try. That is the moment that I l started the lear...
