Re: Did You Drive Your Pre-'16 Today?

Today there was a picnic lunch at the home of George and Georgiana Paril, editors of Blowin' Off Steam, the newsletter of the Antique Steam Touring Affiliated Registry. I took my '11 Stanley 10-horse toy tonneau, and it behaved very well. Don Davidson and Sarah Stanley (yes, THAT Stanley) came in th...

Re: Did You Drive Your Pre-'16 Today?

Once a year the group I sometimes hang with, called Cars and Croissants, does a fund-raising show for the school in our township. I told the organizer I'd bring a car and he asked: "Only one?" Gulp! So yesterday I steamed up the Stanley and managed to get it to the show with only one unscheduled fir...

Re: Brass in Berks County

Since no one else has yet done so, I thought I’d post some thoughts about the BBC show, swap meet, and first two (of four) days of touring. Since my car suffered an acute Failure To Proceed on Tuesday, I schlepped it off to Steve Bono on Wednesday and can’t comment on the rest of the tour. The new l...

Re: Brass in Berks County

I'll be there with my '12 Buick. My son will be there with his E-M-F and a Model T.

Re: Did You Drive Your Pre-'16 Today?

Between all the ice and snow, and salt on the roads, and recovering from a skiing fall, it wasn't until Friday that I was able to take the Model T for a ride. All went well, and it fired right up after sitting idle for over three months. Saturday I loaded my recycling stuff into the T, but got no bu...

Re: Come to a Creepy-Crawly!

I think part of the problem is that motoring got started much earlier in western Europe and the UK than here. England had shorter distances and better roads than we did. There were probably almost as many cars on that first London-to-Brighton in 1896 than there were cars in the whole of North Americ...

Re: Starter for two cylinder REO

When Skip Carpenter worked on my 2-cylinder Buick, he put in a belt-drive starter-generator out of a Cub Cadet. It works, but it isn't the greatest. Without an idler pulley, the belt only makes contact with a small portion of the little pulley on the motor-generator. It has to be quite tight to keep...

Re: HCCA Sierra Vista Convention

Carolyn Gilmore took some pictures of the women's driving school that Nancy Wall (one of the instructors) passed on to me. The women seem very intent on learning how a Model T works. With luck, we'll soon see more women behind the wheel on tour.

Re: HCCA Sierra Vista Convention

The convention is now over, and a fine time it was indeed. On Friday, several of us took cars to the Center for Academic Success, a charter school that starts in pre-K and goes through high school. Kids were brought out in orderly rows, which remained surprisingly orderly despite the obvious excitem...

Re: HCCA Sierra Vista Convention

It's really tough to have to tour in crystal clear weather with temperatures in the 70s or higher, trying to keep sunblock from staining clothes and upholstery. I could be sitting comfortably in my living room in New Jersey, sipping a drink and looking out the window watching the skiing conditions i...

Wednesday. Only 52 miles today. Violent death, booze, and wild, wild women were the order of the day. Wyatt Earp! Doc Holliday! The OK Corral! Boot Hill! TOMBSTONE!! We got to see The Birdcage, a legendary theater/gambling hall/brothel that once hosted a poker game that lasted non-stop for several y...

These aren't official minutes, but I'll try to put down some things that came up at the board meetings that might be of general interest. Bill Ottemann is now Chairman, Bill Carpenter is President, Karl Darby is VP, Carl Pate stays on as Secretary, and Chris Paulsen is the new Treasurer and newest o...

Ever seen an army ghost town? We drove by one today. Camp Naco was an army garrison built during World War I, when Pancho Villa was raising cain south of the border in the Mexican Revolution and staged some raids into the U.S. The buildings, made of adobe and wood, are in an advanced stage of decay....

Monday. We had 58-mile ride today. I got to ride in Gil Klecan's Pierce speedster, a smooth-running but pure blood-and-guts machine that can keep up with traffic. Gil provides a leather helmet and goggles, and they are needed! My wife, Joan, rode with Bran Klecan (Gil's wife) and Tom Klecan (their s...

Re: HCCA Sierra Vista Convention

Joan and I arrived by rental car this afternoon. Beautiful, clear weather. The terrain around her is flat to gently-rolling valleys, elevation 4,600 feet, with mountains poking up all over. VERY dry! A total contrast from our home in NJ, where my old car trailer is locked into the ice and the drivew...

Re: model t speedsters

If you come, you probably won't be alone. There are brass speedsters that are less authentic than it sounds as though yours will be. There are also depot hacks and roadster pickups that look very good and era-authentic, but that never appeared in a Ford catalog of the period. There are brass-era Ts ...
