Bill Chalmers

I'm sorry to have to pass on this message I just received from John Smith in Canada. I'm sure I speak for all of us who knew Bill in sorrow over his death. Gil Fitzhugh I’m sorry to report some sad news. Bill Chalmers passed away on December 30th after suffering a stroke on Christmas Day. There will...

Re: Did You Drive Your Pre-'16 Today?

Peter, nice Cadillac! I'd forgotten that the far west coast of North America has benign winters all the way into Canada. Jugster, yes, it did warm up here Saturday afternoon. But when I wound up the rubber band in the '13 T to go park among the Porsches at a Cars and Croissants gathering, it was sti...

I recently heard that Don Eckel in Washington, NJ, is going onto the steam car repair business. He's very close to you in Glen Gardner. Don has been involved in steam for decades. He may be able to help you.

Did You Drive Your Pre-'16 Today?

The AACA website has a popular thread called something like "Did You Drive Your Classic Car Today?" I'm hoping a similar one here will stimulate some activity. I don't expect a lot of posts until Spring, except from our members in Florida or Down Under, but here's one post to start the ball rolling....

Re: Finding information on George Kipp

Some long shot possibilities: Kipp is not a common name. There is a Kipp in NY state in the current HCCA roster. If you call, you might find he's a grandson or a great-nephew or something, and has some information. Glidden Tours are a Big Deal. There's probably a roster of participants in the AACA l...

Come to a Creepy-Crawly!

Do you have a dependable, but VERY slow, pre-1916 car? A highwheeler? A three-wheeler? A solid-tired truck? A single-cylinder? A tiller-steered steamer? A tiller-steered ANYTHING? Do you avoid driving it even on one-and two-cylinder tours, because the routes are too long and too hilly, and the big t...

Re: Horseless Carriage Gazette

If we were to do this, I think we'd want to put back issues on line, too, along with an index and a search function. For instance, Gary Hoonsbeen has been writing how-to articles for much longer than I've been a member. Without access to back issues, I can't make use of what he wrote several years a...

Re: Video of 59th Annual Autumn Leaf Tour

This is exactly what we need more of on the HCCA website. Thank you for posting! As to whether it ought to be here or in the tours section: My preference would be the tours section if it really was an organized tour (HCCA or other) and this section if it's pictures of something you (or an acquaintan...

Re: Maxwell & Fitch High Wheeler

I don't think it's a car at all. There seems to be something to the left that you hitch a horse to. (I should ask my wife - she speaks horse, and I don't.) Also, it's labeled a portable gasoline engine. I guess you could hire these things out when you needed a passel of work done around the farm, mu...

Brighton USA Days

One of the low-key pleasures of the late summer is the Brighton USA Days tour, that usually happens in New Jersey. For many years, when Margaret’s health permitted, Bob Benz and Margaret Stephens were the hosts at their farm. Recently, Andy and Tricia Wallace have run the tour from Newton, NJ. This ...
