Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Thanks for the posting. I know that Chris Figg was into building Bakelite radiator caps, (I remember that write-up) but do not recall any talk of hub cap reproduction. I will check out the Gazette index and see if I missed something. Speaking of missing, I still have not received my March/April Gaze...

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I need a "TIP" or ADVICE". I scrounged for nearly 40 years to locate and procure a full set of the proper cast brass hubcaps for the Locomobile. A couple of them are going to need some work to make them usable. Here is a picture of the first of the caps that will need work. Note that it has been bum...

Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Do any Dodge Bros. guys frequent this forum? I would like to get an opinion or two regarding the Dodge Bros. starter/generator.

Hello Mark, I would have chosen as you did. The Silicone stuff is good however, it does not trap moisture like DOT 3.

Re: Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

Here is a couple of pictures that show a "before" and a "during" picture of the rebuild of the Locomobile engine. The note here is I chose to use a Delco Dual spark distributor in place of the Bosch DU4 mag that was on the engine when I purchased it. Originally, this 1909 Locomobile engine was run w...

Rebuild Improvements for Reliability 1909 Locomobile

I am involved with a seriously big restoration on a 1909 Locomobile Model L Toy or Baby Tonneau. Please see the attached factory picture of the car as it would have been when new. I will be bringing up issues that I have had to deal with along the way as well as resolutions to those problems. I may ...

Re: Drive line hydraulic disc brake

Hello Mark, That much foot pressure keeps you thinking that you are driving an antique automobile with the plus that you can STOP. You should not have the brake fade that hot drum brakes have and that is scary! We were on tour at Yosemite, a decade ago, in a Buick Model 24 (I think) and going down h...

Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Mark, I answered my own question, the starter you used is designed like a GM stater and has the solenoid mounted with the starter. Nice clean unit and small!

Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Hello Mark, When you engage the starter, in order to start your Buick, does the gear reduction aspect of your starter turn your engine slower than a starter in a modern car or about the same? Where did you mount your starter solenoid? I started with a real labor of love on my Locomobile. I did not s...

Re: Drive line hydraulic disc brake

Hello Mark,
I am curious, how much pedal pressure do you need to exert to get a comfortable brake. I understand that disc brakes require more pedal pressure than drum brakes to actuate. It should not be anymore than the original brakes?

Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Hello Phil, I have also determined that to run a starter only, you should go to the trouble of installing a ring gear. That lets the starter dis-engage from the flywheel after starting. I will have the Dodge Bros. starter/generator home, shortly, so I can work on my second iteration of the belt driv...

Re: Drive line hydraulic disc brake

Hello Mark, That is an interesting bit of information regarding the technology Buick used on your car. My Locomobile uses both internal expanding and external contracting on the rear brake drums. One for emergency brake and the other for the service brake. I may seriously look at a similar update th...

Phil, I have not yet received my March-April Gazette yet to read the article you refer to above. I am anxious to see what has been completed successfully as to stater installation. Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Hello Mark, I assume that the car in restoration is your Model 17 Buick touring car? You are doing a nice job on it. Did you or someone else do your body work? The red Model 16 Buick is more similar to my Locomobile. How do you activate the disc brake you installed on your drive-line? Is it only an ...

Re: Installing A Starter Motor

Hello Mark, Did you also install hydraulic brakes? It looks like a master cylinder nestled in under the starter. Nice and tidy!. Could you share your engineering process that you used to fit the starter. I am not thinking that I want to go the ring gear route by may consider it. Where did you source...
