Ashton Valve Company

Post by Rick a » Mon Apr 27, 2020 10:21 am

In 1871 my ancestor Henry Ashton invented a "pop" safety valve that was a breakthrough in boiler safety. For the next 100 years the company made safety valves and gauges for steam automobiles, stationary boilers, and locomotives. I've been researching the company or the last 3 years and I'm hoping that someone on the site might have some information on the company that I can add to what I've been able to collect so far.
So I hope you enjoy the old material I'm going to post.

The company produced gauges for Stanley Steamers, Winton , Pope-Toledo, White, and possibly more steam cars. Please let me know if you know of any other steam car companies that used Ashton Valve products.

Attached is a short history of the company. There main focus was the Railroad industry, but marine boilers and stationary boilers played an important role too.

Henry Ashton's lock up pop safety valve put the company on the map. Attached is information about the safety valve and it's role in making boiler rooms safer places.

For larger boilers they made a double safety valve.

The safety valve would be the focal point of the company's product line for over 100 years.

In 1892 the company purchased the Boston Steam Gauge Company and entered the gauge market. It wasn't long before the gauges earned the same reputation for quality the safety valves had. Today the gauges on ebay go for good money.
