Valve lash silencer/cam follower silencer for T head motor

Our 1912 Alco has a spring loaded device between the camshaft lobes and each valve stem which appears to act as a silencer for the valve clearance. I am wondering which other makes in the Brass Era may have used this device, and who came up with it first. was it Mercedes or Berliet?or?

When adjusting the valves, this part must be held down with the correct sized wrench in order to get the feeler gauge(s) in. The spring pressure is pretty strong, and I found it overpowered one weak ex valve spring, causing it to "float" and clatter in the closed position. Once the valve spring was replaced, the noise stopped and the motor ran evenly.

I am working on a tech article about this and would appreciate hearing from anybody with similar experience or ideas on this matter. Thanks Andy :)

Hey, that sounds like a nice technology. If you get your tech paper complete, I would like to read and see if it could be used on my Locomobile.
