Wheel Painting Tip

Post by MochetVelo » Mon Dec 29, 2008 4:22 pm

Here's a tip for painting wheels. I thought I'd save possible scratches and chips by spraying them after mounting the tires. Unfortunately, I couldn't get masking tape to stick to the new tires, even after wiping them with various cleaners and solvents. Finally, I removed the tires for spraying on the finish. I then discovered a simpler solution with the still-mounted spare. I let down the air pressure and pushed masking paper in-between the tire and the rim with a thin stick. It took only a few minutes, and it masked off the tire nicely.

To continue with the wheel finishing: To replace the tires, I coated my tire irons with "Plastidip" from the hardware store. This is a rubbery coating for tool handles. I think it will prevent scratching the paint.
