Cool Tool for Cutting Circular Gaskets

Post by jeff deringer » Thu May 14, 2020 9:00 am

Many of you probably already have one of these, but if you know how hard it is to cut a circle free-hand even following a line, check this out. It's a circular cutter made by Olfa. https://www.olfaproducts.com/olfa-cmp-3 ... -quot.html
They probably have bigger ones than mine, but it works great. I even was able to make it work with a cork gasket when I needed one for my oil pump site glass. I apologize for the sideways photo. I can't get it to post correctly, but you get the picture.

Nice job on the gasket. They are nice tools. I used one of them a lot in the past.

Agreed! This is a timely tip - certainly beats the "ink and fingernail scissors" method!

Just ordered one. Didn't know something like that existed. Wish I had already this many times over the years. Thanks!

Jeff, Is the "cutter" a stationary razor blade or a round cutting wheel that rotates?

It is a fixed razor blade. For some materials a round cutting wheel would be better, like the cork gasket material shown. But for most I think the fixed edge is better.

Hello Jeff,
When this gasket cutter came new in the box, did it include a supply of replacement blades? Nothing is as frustrating as trying to make a "nice" gasket with a half dull blade and some materials like Garlock gasket paper does not cut easy.

I just ordered one off Amazon, and they have a replacement blade pack of IIRC 6 as well as a rotary blade option...

I wish I'd known about this decades ago!! Wheee!!!
