I read today of a collector working on a speedster project. He wanted to brass-plate his lug nuts, but hesitated due to poor durability. Instead, he had the nut plated with titanium nitride (TiN). You see this coating drill bits and cutting tools, among other things. It looks a lot like brass and is quite durable (harder than carbide). I would consider this for coating the cast iron shift lever on an early Maxwell, which was originally brass-plated. It seems, however, that the process is dome mostly on smaller parts (?).

To give you an idea of cost, the lug nuts were $5/each, and the job only took 2 days.
