What actually should be used is 300-600w gear lube. I found mine at a local fuel dealer, I think it was Chevron or Texaco, and they are the same company now anyway. Yes, it is incredibly thick. When I used regular 140 it was too light, and makes it's way through the axle seals especially if you overfill it. Make sure the drain holes in the bottom of the axle housing are clear and not plugged so the excess won't run into the brake drums. Just my opinion from experience with 2 14 Overlands. The heavy lube also helps the shifting, as it slows the rotation of the gears down quicker than 140 when the clutch is disengaged.
