Corn Head Grease

Post by MochetVelo » Thu Mar 20, 2014 6:52 pm

One option for leaky gear boxes is "Corn Head Grease", used in corn-harvesting machinery. The most popular is sold by John Deere dealers. This is a "thixotropic" grease, meaning it thins out when agitated and thickens again after each use. It resists leakage from antique differentials and steering boxes. It comes in regular grease-gun tubes. It's a bit tricky to know how much to add to a differential, as it doesn't flow like 600-weight oil. A suggestion might be to heat it up when placing it in the differential. After you know you have the correct amount, you can let it gel.

Here is a video of corn head grease in action:

Is anyone using this product? Will it mix with a small amount of other grease?

I haven't, but I know of several people that have used it successfully, and I've never heard of a failure. I've also read of a few guys mixing grease and oil to adjust the consistency. I don't think I would do that myself, however. I'm not clever enough to know how such a mixture would behave.

On this subject, here is a post today from Cahartley on the AACA Forum:

"I'm going to chime in about the Type OO grease.
Type O is commonly known as John Deere corn head grease.
It's a flowable grease which has much less tendency to leak out of the gear boxes on combine corn heads.
Type OO is even more "liquid" and is very much like 600 weight oil.
I use Type O in my Dodge transmission which is still a crash box but not QUITE as bad."
