I'm restoring a 1901 Conrad steamer model 65. I'm trying to figure how to replicate the carriage black paint that was on it.From what I understand the original paint was shellac with carbon mixed in for the black color. It looked sort of like black chalk. I intend to use Acrylic polyurethane as it holds up well over wood. Is there some technique or paint code to achieve this color? I asked the guy at the auto paint store and his reply was "we got black"...
Thanks for any help on this, Ron

Re: Correct carriage black
Hi there , I would think it is not the color that you are concerned with but the texture? Black is black however the type of paint systems available to us today do not give the same look as when the car was new. One of my 1912 cars, the sales brochure quotes 13 coats of lead paint applied in steam heated oven, won!t happen in today's market. I just use single stage.
Hope this helps. Pete
