1902 Thomas Info

The E.R. Thomas Motor Company, established in Buffalo, New York, began automobile production in 1902 with the introduction of the Model 17.

1902 Thomas Model 17 Overview:
• Engine: Single-cylinder, 8-horsepower.
• Transmission: Two-speed planetary system.
• Body Styles: Available as a runabout or with a detachable rear-entrance tonneau.

This model marked Thomas’s entry into the burgeoning automotive market, following their earlier success with motorized bicycles and motorcycles.

Surviving examples of the 1902 Thomas Model 17 are exceedingly rare. Notably, the Gilmore Car Museum houses a restored 1902 Thomas, generously donated by Jim Grundy of Grundy Insurance.
