The 1913 Hupmobile Model 32 Touring is a legendary, 5-passenger brass-era car built by the Hupp Motor Car Company of Detroit. Introduced to replace the aging Model 20, it solidified Hupmobile’s global reputation for manufacturing affordable, incredibly rugged vehicles.

Key Highlights

  • Pioneering Engineering: Unlike competitors who relied on wood framing, early Model 32s featured a groundbreaking **all-steel body**, which prevented structural rot and dramatically increased survival rates. It is visually distinguished by its low-slung stance, 106-inch wheelbase, wooden artillery wheels, and iconic high-mounted headlights flanking a brass radiator.
  • Mechanical Specifications: It features an inherently sturdy, 182-cubic-inch (3.0L) L-head inline 4-cylinder engine generating 32 HP. The setup relies on a high-tension Bosch magneto ignition (no distributor), a water pump-free thermo-syphon cooling system, flywheel-driven splash lubrication, and a 3-speed manual transmission with an oil-soaked multi-plate clutch.
  • Driving Dynamics: The car requires a hand-crank “Armstrong” start with a properly retarded spark. On regional tours, it offers excellent climbing torque and comfortably cruises at 35 to 40 mph. Shifting requires precision due to a cold-dragging clutch that mandates depressing the pedal fully to engage the clutch brake. Steering uses a classic pitman arm setup, offering heavy but connected feedback.
  • Legacy & Value: To prove its durability, Hupp staged a successful round-the-world endurance drive from 1910 to 1912, driving global exports. By 1913, production topped 12,500 units. Its ruggedness is famously tied to the origins of the Greyhound Lines bus company, which began as a small mining livery service using a Hupmobile.

Today, the Model 32 remains highly sought-after for antique tours because it is durable and mechanically straightforward.
